OUR STORY

Born in Nigeria, I harbored grand dreams as a child. Growing older, I discovered that fashion was my chosen avenue for self-expression, a means by which I could assert my individuality and stand out from the crowd. In 2011, even as a banker, I took the leap and launched my own clothing line in Nigeria. Fast forward eight years. I embarked on a transformative journey with my 12-year-old child, seeking a brighter future in the United States. Upon arrival in the land of opportunity, I encountered a diverse set of challenges. Navigating a new culture, grappling with homesickness, and facing the daunting struggle to make ends meet all bore heavily on my shoulders. Nostalgia for the warmth of my homeland and the supportive community that provided strength during life's trials lingered in my thoughts. It was during these trying times that I realized the unique process of obtaining African clothing for most Africans in the diaspora involves personally sourcing fabric and finding a tailor – an efficient and cost-effective practice in Africa, but quite the opposite in the US. This realization struck a chord, as it often resulted in ill-fitting garments upon arrival. In this foreign land, social gatherings evolved into more than just a means of escaping solitude; they became opportunities to forge new bonds. Recognizing the importance of looking one's best in such situations, HMK Emporium emerged in the USA (from my very small room that I shared with my son) to address these needs. As a proud 100% black-owned business, we not only celebrate the culture that inspires us but also actively contribute to it by expanding our manufacturing efforts in Africa. HMK Emporium is not just a tribute to African heritage; it's a celebration for anyone who, like me, dared to dream.
